59 – Donelan, Brenda – McConnell – I’m looking forward to the Reunion, but when it came to picking a fond memory, I actually, couldn’t think of any!

I really enjoyed going to school, and academically, did quite well, thank goodness. Unfortunately, I was totally useless at sport, couldn’t sing or dance to save myself, painfully shy and easily embarrassed, which consequently left me among the last when it came to being chosen for any ‘team’, whether it be sport or anything else. It also made me an easy target for a couple of teachers that wanted to boost their ego.

I did enjoy the company of the friends I made at school. In fact, I met Nancy Reilly during the first week, and we have remained good friends ever since. At lunch times, Helen, Sharon, Christine, Barbara, Dolores, Nancy and myself used to often sit in the sun on the gutter’s edge just outside the assembly hall… much to the disgust of Miss Glover, who used to say “Can’t you girls find somewhere else to sit, other than the gutter?”

How many of us were in the class of one particular teacher, who would periodically slam the ruler down on the desk, for no reason, just because he could. Then of course, we had the headmaster, patrolling the corridors, strap in hand, and ready to swoop in on any poor student that happened to look sideways during a class. I’m glad those days are gone. On the other hand, I am grateful to Frank Peck (Commercial teacher in 1963). His cousin, John, played football for Hawthorn. A few of us went to the Hawthorn/Geelong match at Glenferrie that year, to check out the cousin, of course. I have followed Hawthorn since that day and am currently a member.

Since leaving school, I worked in the office at Numurkah Hospital for over 4 years, Taig Bros for a few months before moving to Warragul and worked in admissions and switchboard departments at the west Gippsland Base Hospital, Warragul. I married a diary farmer from Bunyip, had 2 children – Estelle and Mark. Of course the next 20 years were spent farming, before we decided to build in Stanhope and send the kids to Uni to study Nursing, both of them. For 10 years I worked in a textile industry in Kyabram and would probably still be there today had they not moved their business to China.

I learnt to do lead lighting a few years ago and really enjoy this very expensive hobby. My family and sister are the only recipients of my work; I wish that I had learnt this craft many years earlier and established a career from it.

I’m not an overseas traveller but do enjoy travel in Australia, having been to the Centre 3 times now, around Tasmania 4 times and I should imagine that we will do all of this again, with a bit of luck, before old age completely takes over.

For the past 5 years or so now, I have been privileged to be able to care for my grandson, Liam, while his Mum and Dad are at work. This always involves sleepovers each week, so our home has become his second home.

I hope that you have a very successful and enjoyable NHS Reunion

59 – Burke, Maureen – Frizelle – Learning typing and cooking & home management. All three have helped me get trhough my life skills. I owned and managed a business of my own for 12 years. A very interesting experience.

59 – McAllister, Wendy – – School was my life line to the outside world. I moved to Numurkah in 1961 during Form 3. I was Vice Captain of Hunkin and Vice form Captain in 1963 and loved my time there. I was in the School Softball team and Basketball(Netball) Team each year. On leaving I worked in Shepparton for 3 years and then went to Melbourne with my first husband and worked there for 8 years (PMG). Moved with my 2nd husband to Seymour Golden Fleece Service Station in 73 and 74 and then back to good old Invergordon for 12 months before we went to Wakool to work on a rice farm. Whilst at Wakool and after having 3rd baby came up with a business idea that then caused us to move to Swan Hill. Grizzly Engineering was born. Then had 4th baby so that gave us 2 of each. Husband wasn’t happy so I bought him out of business 10 years ago and now have 3rd husband and Grizzly has been going for 25 years. We now also have a factory in Bundaberg Queensland and make a variety of farm machinery for farmers and at present are quite successfully exporting Grizzly ploughs to Russia. That beats going broke because of the drought!
